Drive shows 10TB but says "out of space" when uploading

Symptoms

Drive shows 10TB free, but when you upload files or folders, you get an out of space error.

Cause

During upload, the system writes temporary files to your local C drive. The size depends on what you're uploading.

If the total size you're uploading exceeds your C drive's free space, the upload can't complete.

The cloud may have plenty of space, but the upload still depends on your local system drive's free space.

Solution

  1. Check C drive free space:
    • Open File Explorer and check This PC > C drive.
  2. Free up C drive space:
    • Empty the Recycle Bin
    • Delete unneeded downloads and temp files
    • Move large files to another drive
  3. Check whether Problem Files is using space:
    • Drive Settings > Recover failed uploads — clean up old failed files.
  4. Clear Drive cache:
    • See "Manage Drive local cache."
  5. Upload in batches:
    • Split large folders into chunks smaller than your C drive's free space.

Prevention

  • Keep at least 20% free space on C drive.
  • Before bulk uploads, estimate whether the data exceeds your C drive's free space.
  • Power user tip: For bulk uploads, use FTP / sFTP / FTPs to bypass Drive's local staging.
