Downloading and Extracting Compressed Files on iOS (OmniStor App)

OmniStor makes it convenient to download multiple files at once by packaging the selected items into a compressed file (.zip) for download. This article explains why the .zip format is used, how to obtain the compressed file from the OmniStor App, and how to extract and use it on an iPhone or iPad.

Why Are Files Provided in .zip Format?

To ensure file integrity and download efficiency, when using the "multi-select download" feature, the system provides files in a compressed (.zip) format. The advantages of this compression format include:

  • Reduced file size
  • Lower risk of file corruption during transfer
  • Convenient consolidation of multiple files for download
  • Maintains consistency in file management

Step 1: Download the Compressed File within the OmniStor App (Multi-File Download)

When you select multiple files to download at once, OmniStor automatically packages them into a .zip file. Follow these steps:

  1. Open the OmniStor app.

  2. Navigate to the location of the files you want to download, then tap the [Multi-Select] icon on the right side of the title bar.

  3. In multi-select mode, tap the selection box to the left of files and folders in sequence. Repeat until all desired items are selected.

  4. Tap [Package Download] in the upper right corner.

  5. In the pop-up window, rename the packaged download file if desired, then confirm to start the packaged download.

Additional Note: The downloaded file is a compressed (.zip) file and must be extracted before it can be opened and used.

Step 2: Extracting on iPhone or iPad

iOS / iPadOS version 13 and above have built-in extraction functionality. You do not need to install any third-party apps; you can directly open and extract .zip files within the "Files" app.

Basic concept:

  • Locate the .zip file you just downloaded in the "Files" app.

  • Tap the .zip file, and the system will automatically extract it, creating a folder with the same name in the same location containing the extracted contents.

Notes

  • iOS / iPadOS version 13 and above have built-in extraction functionality.

  • No need to install any third-party apps.

  • If you cannot open the file, please check your system version or try downloading the file again.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Why is a single file sometimes downloaded as a .zip?

A: When you use the "multi-select" feature to download, the system packages all selected files into a .zip regardless of the number of files. If you want to download a single file in its original format, download it directly without using the multi-select packaging process.

Q: Where are the extracted files located?

A: In the "Files" app, the extracted files appear in the same location as the original .zip file, inside a folder with the same name as the .zip file.

Q: What should I do if extraction fails?

A: 1. Please first confirm your iOS / iPadOS version is 13 or above. 2. Confirm the .zip file downloaded completely (no interruptions) — try downloading it again.
